It was Dickinson's second solo album and his first after leaving Iron Maiden in 1993, and his first made with guitarist Roy Z. Roy Z's band Tribe of Gypsies backs him: Roy Z on guitars, Eddie Casillas on bass, David Ingraham on drums and Doug Van Booven on percussion, with Dickie Fliszar drumming on "Tears of the Dragon" and Richard Baker on keyboards.

Shay Baby produced the album, recorded at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London, with further sessions at Townhouse 3 and Westside Studios in London, Silver Cloud in Los Angeles, and Granny's in Reno, Nevada, where "Shoot All the Clowns" was recorded.
