The album was mastered at Sterling Sound in January 2011.

Justin Vernon made the record at April Base, the studio he and his brother built inside a former veterinary clinic in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, three miles from the house he grew up in. The sessions ran from November 2008 to December 2010. Vernon built the songs himself but brought in players to change the shape of the band, among them bass saxophonist Colin Stetson and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and he has said that each of the ten songs stands for a place.

Gregory Euclide made the cover artwork. Bon Iver, Bon Iver, sometimes called simply Bon Iver, opened at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 104,000 copies sold in its first week.
