Carlson, a Brooklyn-based artist, designed the cover, and his visual work has shaped the Bon Iver world since this album. Justin Vernon recorded it between 2012 and 2016 at April Base, his studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and produced it with Chris Messina. Jagjaguwar's notes describe Vernon assembling proto-melodies, textures and moods from hundreds of hours of recorded improvisations with different groups of friends. Many of the album's sounds came from a Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer and a harmonizer Messina designed for the band.
