bill-evans-interplay-original-jazz-classics-series
Bill Evans - Interplay (Original Jazz Classics Series)

Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP with Tip-On Jacket and Obi

Craft Recordings issued this edition of Interplay on May 30, 2025, under catalog number CR00855, as part of its Original Jazz Classics series. It was announced in a six-title OJC group that also brought back Evans's Moon Beams. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. The Stoughton tip-on jacket comes wrapped in a gray OJC obi listing the personnel and session credits, along with DownBeat's four-and-a-half-star review, in which Richard B. Hadlock called the album "Strongly recommended." The disc labels follow the Riverside stereophonic design, and the back cover keeps Joe Goldberg's original liner notes and Steve Schapiro's session photographs.

Riverside's original cover billed Interplay as the first time Evans was heard leading a group larger than his usual trio. Craft's notes count eleven albums featuring Evans that Riverside issued between 1956 and 1964, and nearly all of them were trio records. The only other exception was Know What I Mean?, a Cannonball Adderley quartet date. Here Freddie Hubbard's trumpet sits beside Jim Hall's guitar, which takes the place a saxophone would usually fill, over Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Orrin Keepnews produced the session in New York in July 1962 with engineer Tom Nola. Riverside released it in 1963 in mono as RM 445 and in stereo as RS 9445.

The program is five standards and one Evans composition, the title track that opens side B. Goldberg's notes describe it as an original blues, one of the few Evans had written. In 1982 Milestone folded the complete album into The Interplay Sessions, which added August 1962 Riverside tracks by a lineup with Zoot Sims and Ron Carter. That set reached No. 26 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart, and Keepnews's notes for it won the Grammy for Best Album Notes in 1984.

Tracklist

Side A

You And The Night And The Music - 7:03

When You Wish Upon A Star - 5:42

I'll Never Smile Again - 6:30

Side B

Interplay - 8:11

You Go To My Head - 5:02

Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams - 6:24

UPC: 888072662513
Label: Craft Recordings
Release Date: 5.30.25
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/CR00855BillEvans-InterplayPackShotwobi.png?v=1791399319
