Joe Harley produced it, Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It is housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket; the label's photography of the open gatefold shows a full-page portrait of Patton at the organ, captioned at Rudy Van Gelder's studio on the session date, facing individual portraits of all four players.

The series grew out of Blue Note president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Was brought in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to choose and supervise reissues drawn from across the Blue Note family of labels.

The album was recorded on April 29, 1966, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. The quartet pairs Patton's Hammond B3 organ with Grant Green on guitar, Hugh Walker on drums and Richard Landrum on congas. Green had played on every one of Patton's Blue Note dates from the 1963 debut Along Came John through Let 'Em Roll, and this was the last Patton album with Green in the guitar chair. Blue Note's own notes call the record Patton's soul jazz manifesto.

Side A holds two Patton-Green originals, "The Yodel" and "Soul Woman." Side B turns to covers: "Ain't That Peculiar," the Marvin Gaye hit written by Smokey Robinson with Pete Moore, Marv Tarplin and Ronald White; Sam Cooke's "The Shake"; and Duke Pearson's "Amanda." Reviewing it for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album four and a half stars.

Patton was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 12, 1935, and took up the piano at the urging of his mother, a church pianist. He had moved to the organ by 1961 and made his first Blue Note record as a leader in 1963. Blue Note counts 11 albums' worth of material under his name between 1963 and 1970, and he returned to wider attention in the 1990s through his work with saxophonist and composer John Zorn.

Tracklist

Side A

The Yodel

Soul Woman

Side B

Ain't That Peculiar

The Shake

Amanda

UPC: 602458892819
Label: Blue Note Records
Release Date: 7.3.26
Format: Vinyl

https://evergreenvinyl.com/products/big-john-patton-got-a-good-thing-goin-blue-note-tone-poet-edition
