It arrived six years after Modern Guilt, the record that closed out his Interscope contract. The press release called it a companion piece to Sea Change from 2002. Nearly every musician credited on that album came back for this one; producer Nigel Godrich was the only exception. Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Smokey Hormel cut much of the album with Beck in Los Angeles over three days at the start of 2013. \"Blackbird Chain,\" \"Country Down\" and \"Waking Light\" go back to 2012 sessions in Nashville at Third Man Records. His father, David Campbell, wrote the orchestral arrangements, as he had for Sea Change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSessions also ran at Ocean Way in Hollywood and Nashville, Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Capitol Studios and Sunset Sound in Hollywood, The Library in Los Angeles, Rak Studios in London and Gang Recording Studio in Paris. The album was mixed at Electric Lady Studios in New York. \"Blue Moon\" was the first single, in January 2014, and \"Waking Light\" followed in February.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe album entered the Billboard 200 at number three, selling more than 87,000 copies in its first week. Among Beck's US chart peaks, only Guero placed higher.
