The Adelaide-born bassist moved to Los Angeles in 2014. International Anthem notes session and touring work with Makaya McCraven, Phoebe Bridgers, Jason Isbell and Andrew Bird, along with membership in Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet and the group SML. Metacritic lists a score of 81 from five reviews, and Kitty Empire of The Observer called it \"a sparkling, shape-shifting record.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eButterss has said they wrote the songs after touring ended in late 2022 by setting themselves small tasks, such as a song where the bass does not act as a bass, or one built on three-bar phrases. Full-band material was tracked with Chris Schlarb at BIG EGO in Long Beach, with Josh Johnson on alto saxophone, Gregory Uhlmann on guitar and Ben Lumsdaine on drums. Lumsdaine also co-produced and mixed the album. Jeff Parker plays guitar on \"Dance Steve,\" and David Allen mastered it.
