Having worked mostly from home recordings before, the band made it with Jalipaz Nelson, who recorded and mixed it at Audioconfusion in Mesa, Arizona. Jeff Carroll mastered it at Bluefield Mastering.

The title comes from a line in Kurt Vonnegut's novel Hocus Pocus, which in turn points to Barbra Streisand's song "People." Bonnette told the Phoenix New Times the band was heavily into Vonnegut at the time of recording. Two songs borrow from older ones: "People II: The Reckoning" interpolates Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson," and "Survival Song" takes lyrics from Woody Guthrie's "Do Re Mi."

Bonnette sings and plays guitar and glockenspiel, Gallaty plays bass along with electric and slide guitar, John De La Cruz plays drums and Dylan Cook plays mandolin.
