Harley picked Compulsion!!!!! for the series' March 2026 group of releases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe gatefold opens on black-and-white photographs from the session itself: Hill at the piano at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, dated October 8, 1965, with captioned shots of the horn players, the drummers and percussionists, and the two bassists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat one-day session produced the whole album, with Alfred Lion producing; Blue Note issued it in 1967. Hill wrote all four pieces and led Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Gilmore on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Cecil McBee on bass and Joe Chambers on drums, with Renaud Simmons and Nadi Qamar on percussion and Richard Davis adding a second bass on \"Premonition.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHill conceived the record as a statement on the legacy of the African American musical tradition, and said he set out to use the piano \"more as a percussive than as a lyrical instrument.\" He dedicated \"Legacy\" to that heritage, and closed the album with \"Limbo,\" a 20-bar piece.
