This record comes into the series through the 20th Century catalog now held in the Verve family.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e20th Century first issued Ahmad Jamal '73 that same year. It was Jamal's first studio album for the label, and Verve's notes have him playing only the Fender Rhodes electric piano across the record, a real turn for a pianist who had played acoustic piano alone until 1970. Co-producer Richard Evans arranged and conducted an expanded orchestra of strings, voices and horns around him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe program sets Jamal against the soul and funk of the day: War's \"The World Is a Ghetto,\" a top-ten pop hit for War in 1973, Stevie Wonder's \"Superstition,\" and Thom Bell and Linda Creed's \"Children of the Night.\" Verve's notes describe \"Sustah, Sustah\" as spiritual jazz and call \"Peace at Last\" the album's funky centerpiece. Across his years with 20th Century, Jamal placed four albums on the American R\u0026amp;B charts, among them 1974's Jamalca, the record that followed this one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJamal, an NEA Jazz Master and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy recipient, led small groups for six decades.
