A Chess jazz-funk record made in New Jersey is a consequence of ownership: All Platinum, the company Sylvia and Joe Robinson ran out of Englewood, had bought Chess out of bankruptcy in 1975 with help from PolyGram, and struggled to keep releasing material from the Chess roster afterward. The album has been hard to find on vinyl ever since.

Billy Jones produced it and plays guitar and percussion; he and McDuff wrote most of the material together, with "Ju Ju" credited to Jones alone and "Electric Surf Board" to McDuff. Joe Farrell, of Return to Forever and a long run of CTI dates, plays saxophones and flute. The rest of the cast rotates track by track: Brian Cuomo on piano, Robert Banks and Walter Morris on guitar, Frank Prescod on electric bass, and five different drummers across the eight pieces. Side B closes on Lalo Schifrin's "Mannix Theme," arranged by Jones.

The record sets aside the Hammond B-3 McDuff had led soul jazz groups on since the early 1960s. He is credited here on organ, piano and electric piano, and the arrangements are built around keyboards and horns rather than the organ trio format he was known for.

This pressing is an indie-store exclusive on 180-gram brown vinyl, issued by Good Time Records, which also put the album out on CD in 2021.

Tracklist

Side A

Dit Da Dit

Ju Ju

To Be Named Later

Summer Dream

Side B

Jack's Boogie

Mini Pads

Electric Surf Board

Mannix Theme

Complete the Collection (2)

Moon Rappin'

Sophisticated Funk (this release)

*** Indie Exclusive ***
UPC: 741869419038
Label: Good Times
Release Date: 12.18.26
Format: Vinyl

Indie Exclusive Blue 180g Vinyl LP

Celebration returns to vinyl on Catalyst Records as an indie-retail exclusive pressed on 180-gram blue vinyl. By the time of this date he had recorded with Gerald Wilson's orchestra, Santana on Caravanserai, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and Freddie Hubbard. He later settled in Washington State, taught on the music faculty of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle until 2003, and died in Seattle in 2010.

Tracklist

Presenting Mr. Jones

My Marie

Gala

Separation Blues

Schyleen

Lush Life

Two For T

*** Indie Exclusive ***

UPC: 741869419021
Label: Catalyst Records
Release Date: 12.18.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/hadley-caliman-celebration-blue-packshot.jpg?v=1792123809
gary-bartz-ju-ju-man-indie-exclusive-sky-blue-vinyl
Gary Bartz - Ju Ju Man (Indie Exclusive Sky Blue Vinyl)

Indie Exclusive Sky Blue 180g Vinyl LP

Catalyst Records reissues Ju Ju Man on 180-gram sky blue vinyl as an independent-retail exclusive, with a street date of December 18, 2026.

Gary Bartz recorded the album for the West Coast Catalyst label in 1976.
