Blue Note traces the Tone Poet series to label president Don Was' admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Two earlier Rivers albums as a leader, Contours (1965) and A New Conception (1966), are already part of the series.

The session took place at Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on March 17, 1967, and then sat in the vault. Its six tracks first surfaced in the mid-1970s on Involution, a double LP shared with music from an Andrew Hill session. The album did not appear under its own name, with its original catalog number and the intended Reid Miles cover, until 1986.

Rivers plays tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone and flute across six of his own compositions. Donald Byrd on trumpet and Julian Priester on trombone appear on four of them, and James Spaulding plays alto saxophone and flute on five. Cecil McBee (bass) and Steve Ellington (drums), a grand-nephew of Duke Ellington, are the rhythm section throughout. Blue Note's notes describe Byrd's part as a rare foray into the avant-garde for the trumpeter. This was the last of the four albums Rivers led for Blue Note in the 1960s. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it "more proof that Sam Rivers was one of the early giants of the avant-garde."

Tracklist

Side A

Precis

Paean

Effusive Melange

Side B

Involution

Afflatus

Helix

UPC: 602465124828
Label: Blue Note Records
Release Date: 9.11.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/SamRivers_DimensionsAndExtensions_PROD_SHOT.png?v=1791176284
sonny-rollins-sonny-rollins-vol-2-blue-note-tone-poet-series
Sonny Rollins - Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2 (Blue Note Tone Poet Series)

Blue Note Tone Poet Series Mono 180g Vinyl LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the mono Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2, Blue Note 1558.
