In the spring of 1995 his daughter Nora asked Billy Bragg, who had just played a Guthrie tribute concert in Central Park, to write tunes for some of them. Bragg asked Wilco to join him. Mermaid Avenue, named for the Coney Island street where Guthrie lived, is the first album to come out of that collaboration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNobody tried to sound like Guthrie. Bragg and Jeff Tweedy wrote new music in their own styles and split the lead vocals, seven songs each. Jay Bennett co-wrote the music for \"California Stars\" and \"Christ for President.\" Natalie Merchant sings lead on \"Birds and Ships\" and harmony on \"Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key,\" Corey Harris plays lap steel on \"California Stars,\" and Eliza Carthy plays violin on both of those Side A songs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBragg and the band recorded in Dublin at Totally Wired and Windmill Lane, at King Size Sound Labs in Chicago and at Fort Apache in Boston, and produced the album themselves with Grant Showbiz.
